Like everybody else, I’ve been horrified by the terrible images of the Costa Concordia listing and saddened that not everybody made it out alive.
I have actually been on Costa Concordia – I wrote about its spa for The Telegraph – it’s one of only two cruise ships I’ve ever been on and it was enormous.
At the time, although it has since been dwarfed by Allure and Oasis I believe, and quite possibly others, it was the biggest in Europe. Not being a natural water-baby, even though cruising is apparently one of the safest forms of transport, I did find being on something so huge and floating a little alarming at first. However, I guess precisely because it is so big, after a while it’s easy to forget you’re at sea at all. But the idea of something that huge tipping over is awful and I can barely even imagine how terrifying it must have been for the passengers and crew. I’ve been thinking about it most of the weekend and hoping the body count doesn’t rise further. My thoughts are with the families of those who died.
