Le Racou

As a travel journalist, I am lucky enough to have taken my family to stay in some fabulous hotels, but my children Toby, 12 and Olivia, 10, are never happier than when we get to stay in a mobile home.

This summer we spent a week with Canvas Holidays at the Bois de Valmarie campsite in Le Racou near Argelès-sur-Mer in the south of France. We had a large mobile home with a gas BBQ outside. The site is small and friendly with a well-stocked shop and an authentic-feeling restaurant which runs low-key entertainment most nights such as music or magic shows. There is a children’s play area with table tennis tables and free organised children’s activities available, plus a fabulous pool with slides, loungers and a bar.

The site is very well-located just a couple of minutes’ walk from the beach and also the shops and restaurants of Le Racou. The larger resort of Argelès-sur-Mer is a short drive up the coast (or even a walk if you are feeling really energetic) where there are various watersports available. The beaches in this area do get quite busy by the afternoon so one day we went a little further up the coast to the quieter beaches of Grau de Leucate where you can buy oysters fresh from the sea from simple huts to enjoy with a glass of wine.

We also visited the somewhat underwhelming Labyrinthes aux Milles Fleurs  and played crazy golf, but really this area is all about the beach. It’s a great choice for families as on the whole the beaches are not privately owned as many are further up the coast at the Cote d’Azur, and there is plenty of room for children to run and play about.

We loved the campsite – the children enjoyed the freedom to wander to the shop or playground to meet their new friends, the pool was fantastic and our mobile was home was comfortable and well-equipped. Some of the plots were quite squashed together but ours (number 93) overlooked a wooded area and felt quite private. All in all, a great place to stay.

A week at Bois de Valmarie in a two-bedroom Choice mobile home sleeping up to six people costs from £274 per week (April 2015) to £996 (August 2015.) For more information visit www.canvasholidays.co.uk
